Cities XL's gameplay allows you to build cities that are more varied in appearence than those in Simcity 4, with features such as curved roads and different types of zones linear - think inner city with houses on edge, freeform, curved good for suburbs , compared to Simcity 4's grid.

Some of these can be replicated manually in Simcity, like the linear zones, while others like the curved and freeform zones can't be. However, Simcity 4 is the more in depth of the two in most aspects with features such as garbage disposal and pre-game terraforming, but there are a few cases where Cities XL has more detail specific bus routes as opposed to just plopping stations everywhere.

For the less casual gameplay then, I'd go with Simcity 4, but Cities XL isn't entirely lacking in depth either. Sim City 4 has been around for ages, and the graphics show it. It still remains a very complex yet fun game. It still seems like a beta despite being released earlier this month — there are bugs everywhere from one of the tutorials to various minor issues in the game itself.

That said, the game is still being worked on, and will be constantly improved for the forseeable future. The graphics are a huge improvement. It both looks better and operates more smoothly than SC4. So organically growing areas with a few farms, and then a village or two, and a local shop, then maybe a small housing estate as opposed to setting out a gridline and sticking buildings in squares wasn't an option.

Then it occurred to me that the only reason the tiles are so small, is so that EA can charge you to have bigger tiles. And I thought "Yeah, EA can go challenge theselves. Things you'd normally consider fundamental to a fire station being a fire station. And that's such a good reflection of EA's business model. I think that's great. I went in without reading much about what it would be like, because come on! It's Sim City! SC4 was a great game. SimCity was a great game.

SimCity was a great game!! The original is what got me into gaming to begin with. SimCity 5 is nothing but a lame Facebook game with fancy graphics.

What a crock of s t. One of their biggest excuses for the limitations got me laughing. Anybody who was serious about gaming 18 years ago is serious about gaming now. Why wouldn't ol' Gamer Dad have a decent gaming system?

Who the hell are the morons peddling this s t to us? Honestly, I could have looked past the whole online only, DRM, whatever. If only they had given us a quality game. The game that we were all dreaming about! I should have known, after years of peddling "The Sims" crap, these people wouldn't be capable of making a quality SimCity game. Honesty, I want to like The Sims. The scope is completely different and so many people just don't get it yet. They are trying to play this game like SC4 and are complaining when it doesn't work out the same way.

I think it is a fine game so far. I think SC4 is great too. As for now, I think I prefer this new game over SC4 because it has made some really smart iterative improvements.

Opinions, yo. They share the same name, but are not the same game. People just don't care to accept it, or refuse outright. SimCity 4 isn't all that good, i have a feeling people might be remembering it more fondly or using it as an easy comparison against how stripped down the new one is.

If you're after some larger freedom SimCity 4 is probably the way to go, but it lacks focus objective wise. I like the way Alex put it in the review, the new one seems like it would be a good "multiplayer" option of a game that would ideally have a larger solid singleplayer campaign.

Sure, a number of things about the new SimCity are fundamental differences, compared to SC4 and previous installments, and months or years from now, some people will still prefer SC4. Of course, that's not the whole review, which is positive overall. Just a few examples of what people were complaining about when SC4 first launched. Some of these are still present in the game, but it has improved in other ways, over the years. Overall I think that SimCity may not be better than 4, depending on what you're looking for, but the things they are doing with the simulation makes for a great foundation for whatever future it has.
