Can i drain my gunite pool
Scott, I have to strongly disagree about h-valves. In the two states we work in its a requirement for all commercial pools regardless of site conditions. I have seen situations where the pool was not constructed in a water table and floated from pumping out the pool and because the water could not perk out fast enough, it floated the pool.
The only problem I have seen with h-valves is when they are in the main drain sump and leaves covered the drain resulting in the valve opening from the low pressure generated by the pump. Once opening there is often sand particles preventing the valve from properly closing. Although this is a nuisance, its a lot easier to fix than a floated pool. Gorilla, that monster word on the chlorine bucket tells you if cyanuric acid is included in the active ingrediants.
Anyone that doesn't put a dry well system in place before building a pool in an area where the water table is high needs them, I agree. Darn pain in the butt when the seal leaks pool water out.
Sometimes they get put in a drain sump and are hidden by the cover. Happens every year at least once. I prefer to see the dry well system in place when a pool is expected to be drained at some interval. A lot of commercial pools in my area are in the off season. In the Spring, they get repainted yuk and refilled. Pulling the water from the dry well prevents potential pop ups until the hydrostatic plugs can be pulled.
Then the dry well can be shut off. Hydrostatic relief valves seals deteriorate. The rubber gaskets last from 5 to 10 years. The chances of the same tech draining the pool knowing the valves are there and how old they are are pretty slim.
The valves can also get crud stuck in them that prevents sealing. The added costs of installing a dry well system however can deter them in the planning and bidding phase. I haven't tried this myself but I have read where someone was able to replace the water without reducing the water level.
This was done by placing a sheet of plastic over the top of the pool. Then they filled the pool on top of the plastic and drained the pool water underneath the plastic at the same time and at the same rate. The plastic sheet would sink as the water on top increased while the water level below the plastic would drop. This is probably far from perfect but I would think it would be good enough to replace most of the water.
Also, the chemical that removes CYA is the same one that is used in the test kits, Melamine and it is very expensive. Wasn't that the trace ingredient that was found in some dog food a couple years back that caused so much canine illness and some deaths as well???
If so, I'd be sure I didn't use the CYA reducer in any pool that the family dog uses for an occasional water bowl. Maybe the melamine turns into a harmless chemical when used as a CYA reducer, but I wouldn't chance it with my family pooches. Indem Sie weiterhin auf der Website surfen bzw.

If you do decide to do it yourself, make sure all of the correct precautions are taken in order to prevent any pricey damage to your pool. Depending upon whether you have an inground pool made out of concrete, gunite or vinyl will affect what approach you need to take to empty the pool.
In general, draining this type of pool is the trickiest. Inground pools made of concrete or gunite are susceptible to popping out of the ground if drainage is not done properly. If there has been a surplus of rain recently or your pool is located in a wet area, it is best not to try and drain the pool yourself at all. Excessive ground water can cause this type of pool to "float" out of the ground when draining is occuring.
If you do decide to drain this pool yourself you first need to locate whether or not you have a hydrostatic valve which is found in the main floor drain. If you do not have a hydrostatic valve, it is best to call a pool professional to help you drain the pool. If you do have a hydrostatic valve and decide to proceed to empty the pool yourself, you first need to rent a sump pump from your local hardware store.
Next, attach the hose to the sump pump and lower the pump into the deepest section of the pool. The other end of the hose needs to be draining into the sewer drain pipe in your yard. Turn the pump on and let it go to work. Periodically check the hose to make sure it's draining properly. Pool owners that come across problems with draining this type of pool are often draining it too slowly, leaving it empty for too long, or encountering a hydrostatic valve failure.
In almost all cases it is best to hire a professional pool service to drain your inground gunite or concrete pool. Vinyl lined inground pools are the most vulnerable to ripping or tearing, but the process of extracting the water is similar to a concrete or gunite pool. If you decide to drain this pool yourself, you will first need to rent a sump pump that can be submerged under water.
After renting the proper sump pump, connect it to the sewer access point and submerge the other end in the pool. Plug the pump into an outlet and let it go to work. If you are replacing the liner or doing repairs, make sure they can be done shortly after you empty the pool. Depending upon the condition of the pool, leaving it empty for too long can cause drying or cracking from the sun or can even cause the pool to collapse. Sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry, if you have any hesitation about draining either type of pool yourself, feel free to contact AAA pools at or info aaapoolservice.

Can a gunite pool be left empty? In one word — no. Draining a swimming pool should be a last resort. But sometimes it is necessary and if it is done right, it can be done. This is due to excessive ground water pressure. As a vessel is emptied and becomes lighter, hydrostatic pressure can float it right out of the ground. Gunite pools — If the pool is to be drained for any length of time, be sure to have holes drilled into the bottom of the pool to relieve hydrostatic pressure.
Be careful not to drill thru plumbing lines. Vinyl pools — The walls of vinyl pools are very susceptible to damage if drained. In addition, liners tend to contract when a pool is drained, making is very susceptible to damage upon refilling the pool. Another issue of draining a pool — what to do with the water. Gohlke Pools. Jon Hines Jr. First, I want to thank Gohlke Pools for being responsive to my needs. We moved in almost 2 years ago and never had a We have a saltwater pool, so it's imperative that it run approx 10 hours per day in this heat to convert chlorine. Pooltroopers services our pool and I had left a not for the Pool Tech to call me last Friday when he came out. They send an email showing that they have been there and status of your pool, including a photo of your pool.
He didn't call me and his work bucket was in the photo probably 2 feet from where I had left the pool pda and note. I called Cust Svc to see why he didn't call me as I had asked as there had been a couple of times that the pool was on the verge of turning green and I had to scrub the walls, so I wanted to discuss with the Pool Tech. I was told that the Supervisor would be notified and would call me. After the pump problem on Sunday, I called back on Monday asking why I had not been contacted already and to see about getting service scheduled.
I was told that would contact the Supervisor again and he would contact me about the Pool Tech and also to schedule service. As a backup, I also called Gohlke. I told them that I was a new customer and that my pump would not come on. The immediately scheduled a service call for Wednesday 2 days which I found acceptable. They came out today and I explained the problem to the Technician.
He told me we could try that, but there would be now warranty on the work. He suggested that with the parts shortages that I might want to consider replacing the whole pump, not just the motor, because it looked old. My house is 6 years old. The previous owners put the pool in at least 1 to 2 years AFTER the house was built, so the pump can't be more than 4 years old.
He then went to his truck, got a new capacitor and installed it. I was told when I scheduled the service call that the technician would come out, diagnose the problem and give me an estimate BEFORE doing any work.
